Roskilde was Denmark's capital for centuries, and it still carries the weight of it. The twin-spired cathedral — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is the burial church of some 40 Danish kings and queens, and down at the harbour the Viking Ship Museum displays five 1,000-year-old ships salvaged from the fjord, rebuilt with almost forensic care. It's the easiest 'real Denmark' day trip there is: half an hour by train, everything walkable, and a genuinely lovely old town in between.

Getting there
- Regional trains run from København H to Roskilde in about 25 minutes — several per hour.
- The cathedral is a 10-minute walk from the station; the Viking Ship Museum another 15 minutes downhill to the fjord.
- Allow half a day; a full one if you sail or linger over lunch by the harbour.
Do the cathedral first, then walk downhill to the ships — the fjord café at the museum is a good lunch stop.
